In Beijing's ever-changing metropolis it can be tough for a restaurant to stand out. But the new Sun Palace restaurant at the Crowne Plaza, with its uninhibited views of the Olympic Sports Center and an all you can eat 88 RMB Dim Sum weekend brunch, is more than enough to seek out amongst the urban sprawl. It's also the only five star hotel restaurant in Beijing to serve up crocodile.

在日新月异的北京,一家新餐馆要想脱颖而出,不是件容易事。但是,新云南酒店的太阳宫粤菜餐厅,视野宽濶,远眺奥运村一览无遗;周末88元尽享广东早茶――仅凭这两点,足以使其从餐馆林立的西坝河一带脱颖而出。这里,也是北京唯一一家为食客提供鳄鱼菜品的五星级酒店。

Master Chef Steven Wang heads the Guangdong-style restaurant. Originally from Hong Kong, he's proud of his native cuisine - respected for its fresh steamed vegetables, dim sum, and generally viewed as healthier than the other Chinese styles - and ensures that his loyal patrons are aware of all the health benefits they're devouring.

王先生是这家粤菜餐厅的主厨,来自香港。他很自豪他的家乡菜。他认为相较于中国其它菜系,广东菜烹制方法更健康:包括每日臻选的新鲜蔬菜、制作精良的广式点心(早茶)。这是老主顾不断造访的原因。

Sun Palace claims that 'crocodile supports your body during the climate change from winter into spring.' So it was fitting for our starter to be the "Double boiled crocodile head with Chinese medical herbs" soup (88 RMB). The meat was delicious, tender and with a texture reminiscent of chicken or maybe a hearty fish. And with ten thousand crocs eaten in Canton alone every year, this truly is a hallmark Guangdong dish.

广东人认为,鳄鱼肉性温,脂肪含量低,有助平喘化痰、止咳润肺。尤其在天气转凉时,可改善气喘症状。按照广东人的习惯,我们首先品尝了一款地道汤品:鳄鱼煲当归汤(RMB88元)。鳄鱼肉鲜嫩幼滑,犹如细嫩的鸡肉或鱼肉,令人赞叹。据说广东地区每年都要吃掉一万条鳄鱼,这是广东菜的一大特征。

We moved on to our mains: spinach with pieces of pork, a crocodile stew, egg fried rice, and a combination platter of cured meats. For once quality does not come at the cost of quantity, as the portions were generous. Steven Wang confirms that a 'proper' Guangdong dinner should "befit an emperor", and as such should include heartier portions.

我们开始品鉴主菜。肉炒菠菜、红焖鳄鱼肉、蛋炒饭、以及特色烧腊拼盘。菜量很大,性价比确是不同凡响。王先生认为,健康是永恒的主题。恰到好处的广东菜,有助于“君王”品用。

For desert, we opted for two daintier dishes: a small selection of fresh fruit, and a 'steamed glutinous rice flour ball'. The latter, being Chef Wang's own personal creation was especially noteworthy and melted in our mouths.

之后,我们试用了两款甜品。水果拼盘及金捞丸。后者,是主厨王先生的私房秘籍,咬在嘴里软糯香甜,妙不可言。

Dim sum is traditionally eaten during brunch hours as it's viewed as more of a quick snack to be had while reading the papers. So as to not break with tradition, free newspapers as well as free tea and an unlimited selection of 25 different dim sum dishes is included in Sun Palace's excellent 88 RMB weekend special.

Though the dim sum menu is changed regularly, the "supreme shrimp dumpling" (??????) and the aforementioned "glutinous rice ball" (???)are permanent fixtures and are highly recommended.

The crocodile was a tasty surprise, the dim sum delicious, and the prices fair. Overall, a welcome addition to Beijing's collection of Guangdong restaurants.
